Over 70,000 Specialists Needed in Luxury Manufacturing by 2028
Updated: Jul 10
Prada chairman: Technology will never replace the abilities of creators and craftspersons.

Recent figures indicate that - because of generational turn-over - 70,000 specialized professionals will be needed in luxury manufacturing by 2028 - and over 270,000 overall. It is estimated that the current labor supply can meet only 50% of that demand. As a result, specialists in luxury manufacturing - fashion accessories, jewelry, leather goods, furnishings, and high-end watches, etc. - will be in demand, creating great - and interesting - opportunities for young people.
With artificial intelligence raising new questions about the future of work, Prada Chairman of the Board and Executive Director, Lorenzo Bertelli has noted that what "technology can never replace is the craftsperson’s ability to work with their hands—their know-how, their skills developed over years of work; this is what we need to convey to young people."
Continuing, he noted that "For this reason, those who learn a craft should not be afraid of new technologies" because "the most exciting thing for a person is knowing that with their own hands they can create something that no technology will ever be able to do."
